When my Dad was a young boy, he developed a passion for rock hunting from his parents. He shared this passion and knowledge with me throughout his life. One of our favorite activities was decorating the bases of wired trees with small pewter figurines. As we worked on these trees, I used my imagination for what creatures might live around them and what story the piece of art could tell.
When I grew older, I asked my Dad to teach me how to make trees, and he spent a day showing me his methods and even gave me some unfinished pieces to study. However, before I made a tree, my Dad was diagnosed with cancer and passed away just over a month later.
After his passing, I studied the unfinished wire trees and the instruction book that he gave me, complete with pencil notes on the pages. I eventually mustered the courage to make my own double-wire tree, measuring and cutting 16 feet of wire, twisting the wire together to form leaves and branches, and then bringing them all together to form the tree. I then shaped the roots and glued the tree to a slice of agate, just as my father had often done. The next day, I decorated the tree with gems in each leaf spot. I was thrilled to have finally made a tree like my Dad!
I am passionate about making these one-of-a-kind trees and have expanded my art by using different techniques and materials for the leaves. Each tree I make is crafted with love ,care and holds memories of my father - the Rockhound.
